Planet Terror Trailer Analysis

Planet Terror is a action, comedy, horror hybrid released in 2007 and directed by Robert Rodriguez who is well known for directing Sin City.
This trailer has a very classic zombie horror feel to it with the use of the awesome voiceover which provides some narrative and the overlay used to make it look older and grittier. It looks like it uses more practical effects than CGI which I prefer. There are some brief moments in the trailer where comedy is used to lighten it up.
Overall I love this trailer because of the use of the music alongside the action and practical effects as well as the very unique gun for a leg idea which is just great.
If I had to suggest something to improve it would be to include more close ups of zombies because we don't really get a good look at one but apart from that its great.

Underworld Trailer Analysis

Underworld is a action horror released in 2003 and directed by Len Wiseman who is also known for directing Die Hard 4 and the Pilot episodes for Hawaii Five-O and Sleepy Hollow.
This trailer is extremely stereotypical to the action genre with some horror elements. It starts off with some collision cutting between some action shots and a shot of the main character looking over a city. It uses a mix between dialogue and a voiceover to get across the narrative. The horror elements used are the two factions of Werewolves and Vampires (as well as some gore featured in the actual movie) which are two very well known creatures used in many horror films such as the 30 Days of Night or The Wolfman. The trailer also uses a lot of CGI effects for the Werewolves and some more practical effects for the Vampires.
 I think this trailer is good but it is too stereotypical and seems a bit unoriginal as well as some of the effects looking a bit poor most notably the 'jump scare' at the end litarally being a slow motion jump into a puddle.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil Trailer Analysis

Tucker and Dale is a comedy horror released in 2010 directed by Eli Craig who is also well known for directing Zombieland. This trailer starts off as your stereotypical horror film by introducing the teenage heroes/victims driving to a forest for a camping trip. A forest is a conventional place for a horror because it is associated with the fear of being lost and secluded in the middle of nowhere, a cabin is also shown with a cow skull out front and dull lighting conditions giving it a very creepy feel. The trailer at first gives the impression that Tucker and Dale are the dangerous killer hillbillies that are often associated with psycho killer horror films by using dialogue and intimidation to make us think they've kidnapped one of the teenagers. However about 30 seconds in the mood changes and introduces some comedy to the trailer to make us see that the kidnapping is a misunderstanding. This instantly puts a twist on this movie making it more unique in its genre by swapping the roles of the two groups of characters and making the teenagers evil. Gore is used later in the trailer to remind us that the film is still as much of a horror as comedy. The trailer starts off slow and starts to use a lot of action to keep the interest of its audience.
Overall I think that this is a good trailer because it has very good and simple narrative to explain what's happening and uses a few references from other well known horror films like the part where Tucker runs out swinging a chainsaw around (Texas Chainsaw Massacre).
One thing I would criticise about this trailer is that it shows nearly all the teenagers deaths in the trailer which doesent leave us much reason to watch the full film.

Butchered feedback

                       

The above video is the class reaction after watching our finished product during this they also wrote down what they thought. I was pleasantly surprised with the feedback, seven people in the class scored us a 7/10, four people scored us a 8/10 and one person scored us a 9/10. Nearly everyone wrote that they really liked the gore effects which I'm happy to say were done by me and most people liked the music and narrative too. About half of the class thought the text we used was good and the other half did not or didn't mention it. One of the other main criticisms was that there wasn't enough close ups, which I agree with because if we used more close ups we could have shown off the zombie make-up more. A couple of people also pointed out that there wasn't a jump scare at the end, this is because we where running very short on time so couldn't film one and didn't have a clip to use for it already. Overall I thought that the classes feedback was mostly positive and was better than I expected, so I'm pleased with this.

This is my horror magazine cover, i used CJ on the front cover and put make up on him however this is before i learnt how to do better zombie make up like how i did in the Butchered trailer which is why it looks a bit bad. I like the fonts used in the title and Butchered text.

Stereotypical Horror Fan

This is an insight into what a stereotypical horror fan of the gory genre would look like. A person named John, 24 years old working at his local music shop. Known for playing the guitar and playing Football. His favourite horror film would be the Human Centipede. He is a fan of the mainstream horror films and would fit into the C1 category when looking at his social class. Overall, he is a mainstreamer.

He is the kind of guy who enjoys going out with friends to their local Pub, but would also like to sit around and play Video Games. Studied Media Studies at College and passed with a B having a knowledge of the subject. Used to Microvwave dinners to save time cooking, generally laid back and lazy person.

From doing this exercise, I've now got a better idea at the kind of person that I am aiming the chosen trailer at. This lets me know their interests in the film, best places to advertise when pinpointing this certain group and what they would want in the trailer in ways of Gore.

Roughcut of Butchered

Feedback on roughcut trailer

Our group showed a rough cut for our butchered trailer to the rest of the class today, who gave us their feedback with an overall score, the feedback was mostly good and most people liked the music (X8), makeup(X9) and titles(X3) however most people agreed that there needed to be more gore(X6) and it also need to be longer(X10) because at the moment it only lasts about forty seconds when it should last about a minute. The length of the trailer is our main problem so we need more filming days, it can be hard to find a day where everyone is free and we need more people for actors too which can be difficult to find. Our next main problem is gore, we need more of it, there are loads of effects we could use but the time it takes to do these effects is too long. But this does not mean that we will not do gore effects, it will happen. The trailer as it Is at the moment scored one five, six sixes, four sevens and two eights, Our style of trailer may not appeal to your everyday audience which may be part of the reasons for the scores however there is no doubt that improvements need to be made.

This is the finished poster for my groups trailer 'Butchered' i got the idea from the cover art of the first 'Max Payne' game because it shares a similar style as it is black and white. Some posters from Quentin Tarintino come to mind as well because he has used silouettes and outlines in some of his work e.g. Kill Bill.

PLOT DETAILS OF YOUR IDEA

 In the small town of Yarmouth there is a butchers that gets some bad pork due to the swine flu that has been spreading through the farms of Norfolk, unworthy to be sold to the public so it is binned. One of the many hungry homeless people found in Yarmouth finds it and eats it little does he know how bad the infection is and eats it, he dies in the night and rises from the dead. On instinct he travels to the most obvious source of meat and goes back to the butchers, can the butcher defeat his mistake and save the town? Will he survive?

 

POSITIVE RESPONSES FROM OTHER CLASS MEMBERS

 We got a lot of positive feedback from the group and they said that they like how the butchers links to the context and narrative. They also liked the idea of the butcher being a male hero.

 

NEGATIVE RESPONSES FROM OTHER CLASS MEMBERS

 Our negative responses weren't too bad and we didn't get a lot other than zombies are a bit overused at the moment and some conflict about the butcher being the hero even though its his fault.

 We are happy with our score and think that our idea is worth using for our actual trailer, the only problem is the locations that we would like to film are likely to be crowded so it will make filming more difficult.
